Le manseng noir est un cépage de l’ouest des Pyrénées, proche du tannat, célèbre cépage du sud-ouest de la France. Il est appelé aussi mansein, mansec ou encore mancep dans le Lot. Il existe depuis le 13ème siècle et a donné naissance au petit manseng et au gros manseng, deux cépages de la même famille mais aux traits de caractère assez différents.Aujourd’hui, les nombreux cépages du Sud-Ouest ont supplanté le manseng noir qui n’existe pratiquement plus. Le manseng noir reste essentiel pour l'AOC Béarn, où il cultivé sur une dizaine d’hectares. Pourtant le manseng noir est un cépage vigoureux, productif et résistant aux maladies. Il donne des vins à la robe colorée, puissants, aux arômes de fruits noirs, de champignons, assez fins et au potentiel de vieillissement intéressant.
