Croisement interspécifique entre le 5163 Seibel (2 Gaillard x 2510 Seibel) et le 5593 Seibel (880 Seibel x 4202 Seibel) obtenu par Albert Seibel (1844-1936). Le Chelois est parent avec le De Chaunac et le chancellor. Il a été multiplié au Canada dès 1946 et 1948 pour les Etats unis, en France il n'est plus planté, donc plus présent au vignoble et quasiment en voie de disparition.
